Wednesday 16th March 2011
Noarlunga Centre (Ramsay Place – between the council offices & Centro Colonnades),
12pm – 2pm – FREE

Brillig aren’t sure how they get away with advertising ‘Murder Ballads’ as a ‘family friendly event’…. But the kids do seem to dig it! Brillig’s daytime shows always manage to get the littlies groovin’ to the moody tunes. Good thing they don’t know the lyrics!

Come and see the conundrum at Noarlunga Centre as Brillig (duo) brave the daylight for a 2 set free show from 12noon to 2pm. That’s surely proof they’re not actually vampires….

Saturday 19th March 2011
SA Folk Centre
“Spellbinding Storytelling at the SA Folk Centre
with Brillig & Soursob Bob”

Can’t believe Brillig haven’t played the SA Folk Centre before? Neither can they! Let’s see, they’ve played folk sets at festivals in Germany, New Zealand, our own Fleurieu, and most recently Illawarra, but now the backwards band is finally on home turf!

Fellow well-travelled storyteller, Soursob Bob, is relinquishing his current role as rock god frontman of ‘Kelshy’ to play a rare solo acoustic set to open the night. You’ll also hear a song that Brillig co-wrote with Mr Bob, featuring the cheery theme of deer hunting: ‘Most Unlucky of the Lucky Deer.’ That’s gotta end well….

Get along to the SA Folk Centre on Saturday 19th March for Brillig’s debut at the venue, and send-off into the realm of songwriting hibernation. You won’t hear Brillig’s sea shanties, murder ballads, and imaginative alt. folk live again until September (unless say, Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen ask the band to support them in the meantime…!). So don’t miss this special show. Read more >>

Doors Open 7:30 pm; 18+, Entry $10 / $8 conc

Tickets: Dramatix

Even though these are Brillig’s LAST SCHEDULED GIGS for about 5 months, there will be regular newsletters in the meantime. There is some special news to announce shortly, and the band will keep you posted with photos from behind the scenes, the scoop on new material, and other random musings. Watch for April’s newsletter, and keep up with the goss on Brillig’s Facebook and Twitter.

Haven’t seen Brillig’s video clip for “The Old Captain” yet?  Well, it’s still on YouTube… You can also request it again on Rage, if you so desire 🙂

While you’re watching, see how many folks you can name from its cast of SA favourites! Here’s a head start:

In the top still: Tristan Newsome (aka Self Preservation Society), Brillig’s Denni Meredith, Aliese Millington (aka LeighStarDust)

In the bottom still: David ‘Daisy’ Day, Trish Flowers, Bob Dunstan

If you want to cheat, the full cast list is in Brillig’s blog >>

That’s all ’til next time, from “the band of constant sorrow….”

Brillig’s East Coast Tour Is A Deliciously Dark Start To The New Year

Posted in Scene news with tags on January 4, 2011 by promofabrik
Shows in Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney & the Illawarra Folk Festival! Brillig are heading eastward en route to the Illawarra Folk Festival (NSW), and they’ll be taking in the sights along the way with a 3 – city mini tour.

Starting on 8th January in Melbourne, Brillig will take in Canberra & Sydney as well, before it all culminates in Bulli (an hour south of Sydney) for the 2011 Illawarra Folk Festival, featuring Eric Bogle, Orkestra Del Sol (UK), Bettina Schelker (Switz), Neil Murray, The Barons of Tang, The Go Set,  and many more.

Brillig is thrilled to return to the folds of the folk scene – this is their follow-up festival from their very well-received appearance at the Wellington Folk Festival in New Zealand back in October.

For a deliciously dark start to the New Year, join Brillig for some intimate evenings of sea shanties, murder ballads and beautifully tragic gothic folk tales, all gracefully played on their huge menagerie of instruments – from Banjo to Autoharp, Bass to Viola, Guitar, Accordion, Ukulele & Harmonica.

With their bygone-era dress sense & charming banter, Brillig’s enchantingly melancholic brand of folk is said to be strangely uplifting, despite their somewhat peculiar subject matter (namely: absinthe, ghosts, bloody family feuds, insanity
 and love).

With their ‘5 star’ album The Red Coats in tow, and fresh from the release of their new video clip for ‘The Old Captain’, Brillig will be showcasing their sublime mix of innovation & folk.

Joining them in Sydney and Melbourne are their Black Rain (Germany) labelmates, Dandelion Wine (VIC) who will be adding their ethereal post-dream-pop touch to the shows. Adelaide pop songstress LeighStarDust will also be making some special guest appearances along the way.

TOUR DATES:
Saturday 8th January – Melbourne – Pure Pop Records (3pm)
Saturday 8th January – Melbourne – Wesley Anne (8pm) with Dandelion Wine
Tuesday 11th January – Canberra – Front CafĂ© & Gallery (8pm)
Wednesday 12th January – Sydney – The Vanguard (8pm) with Dandelion Wine

Sunday 16th January – Illawarra Folk Festival – The Chapel – (12 noon)

Photos on Brillig’s Flickr
Brillig loved gallivanting around New Zealand back in October, visiting Rotorua, the WETA workshop, Hobbiton…oh yeah, and doing some awesome gigs! The band has now released some happy snaps from NZ as well as some ‘serious’ pics from the Wellington Folk Festival.

They also recently played the always-fun Whitmore Square Arts Fair, and while they didn’t get any photo evidence of kids dancing to their murder ballads, they SWEAR it happens!

Brillig spent their favourite holiday – Halloween of course – playing at a private 5th birthday party for good friend Paisley (who features in Brillig’s new film clip!). Trying not to scare the kids too much, Brillig dressed up as rock icons ‘The Dead [white] Stripes and Slash’. Oh goodness. Elizabeth still hasn’t let go of the drumsticks…

A few fun pics from the above shenanigans are on Flickr. Enjoy!

Thanks for a Fabulous 2010
The past year was pretty kind indeed to Brillig, and some special folks deserve a mention. It’s quite a massive list – honestly, it like scrolled for a whole page on its own, and that’s just for 2010! So we’ve given is its own space in the web airwaves.

Take a deep breath and click here>> THANK YOU!

In brief, though, a big heartfelt thanks to YOU and all the rest of our families, friends & fans who have made it yet another unforgettable year for Brillig!

Can’t wait to see what 2011 brings… See you on New Year’s Eve and have a safe & happy holiday season.

Brillig Video Clip Launch (last gig of 2010)

Posted in Scene news with tags , , on November 29, 2010 by promofabrik
This is it! Brillig is ready to launch its spiffy new video clip for the

sea shanty / drinking track ‘The Old Captain’, and can’t wait to show it off!

Made by the extraordinarily talented Nima Nabili Rad, Daniel Principe & crew, the clip was filmed at Brillig’s spiritual home the wonderful Grace Emily Hotel in late September, and it’s a stunner.

This lament for the loss of a beloved character includes cameos from many SA artists & personalities, and the clip also features radio legend David “Daisy” Day as the Old Captain himself.

See below for a list of credits, and come along on the night to spot your friends (or yourself!) amongst the action as Brillig rolls the clip on the Grace’s big screen. Be sure to sing along…
all you extras will have those lyrics burned into your brains by now!!

“…raise your glass in the air…”

This will also be the last Brillig live show of 2010, and what a year it’s been!
From a New Zealand tour, Adelaide, Sydney & Melbourne CD launches, Fringe & other Festivals ‘n’ Fairs,
showcases, international supports and more, Brillig thinks a clip launch is fitting way to wind up 12 months.

It will be an early & relaxing Sunday night, and Free Entry, so make sure you’re there to help celebrate.

The audio track for ‘The Old Captain’ is available on Brillig’s current LP ‘The Red Coats,’
why not grab yourself a copy on the night. Remember, murder ballads make great Xmas gifts…

Stay tuned for Brillig’s ‘2010 Highlights’ Newsletter and see you on the 5th December at the Grace Emily!

Brillig Double CD Launch with Dandelion Wine in Melbourne

Dandelion Wine and Adelaide’s Brillig join forces for the official Melbourne launch of two critically acclaimed new albums from Germany’s Black Rain records in a special co-headline double bill at the Toff on Sunday 14th November.

After over a year of living, touring and recording in Europe, Dandelion Wine return to Melbourne to launch their latest album “All Becompassed By Stars”. Recorded in a freezing Berlin winter, the album takes their trademark use of exotic string instruments such as dulcimer and bell cittern and adds dense layers of middle eastern percussion and upsizes the beats until they’re big enough to rearrange your neural pathways.

Joining them on the night will be labelmates Brillig (SA), who will be launching a brand new collection of vintage melancholia, murder ballads and sea shanties entitled “The Red Coats”. Not to be shown up in the instrumental department, Brillig will take to the stage with autoharp, viola, uke, accordion, banjo and harmonica adding to their rich guitar and bass tapestries.

Both albums were released in Europe to critical acclaim earlier this year on the German label Black Rain and are only just now seeing the light of day in Australia.

Brillig Headline Coopers Alive’s Acoustic Showcase

This is a big one, folks!! Acoustic music’s very own showcase in the massive Coopers Alive festival, featuring hand-picked bands.

Our stellar lineup includes buzz act The Timbers & captivating troubadour Self Preservation Society, and we’ve all decided on calling the show ‘Silence can be like Thunder’.

That’s a line from a Bob Dylan song called ‘Lovesick’, and we each felt that this particular phrase really related to own musical styles in different ways.
The ‘silence’ in particular is appreciated by Brillig’s vocalist/guitarist Matt Swayne: “With a quiet audience, we love using silence in our music. It can make a lyric seem to float in the air endlessly.”

With each interpreting the title in a slightly different manner, it should make for a great night… In fact, WOMAD have signed on as one of the evening’s sponsors, and are providing 2 double passes to WOMAD’s Friday night festivities as a prize. All ticketholders to ‘Silence can be like Thunder’ will be in the running to win!
Prize winners will be drawn at the end of the night, right after the full lineup performs a special ‘all-in’ rousing version of ‘Lovesick’, so stick around!

Tickets are now on sale at The Wheatsheaf (ph 8443 4546 ) & at the door, but hurry – only 100 are available.
$10 entitles you entry on the night as well as an exclusive CD, featuring a track from each of the bands plus a one-of-a-kind special souvenir playbill.

To help get you in the mood, the band has prepared some ‘Coopers tasting notes’ for you. So why not read why “Brillig is like a Coopers Pale Ale” in the Brillig BLOG >>

Brillig support Voltaire (NYC) – Cabaret Extravaganza TWO SHOWS!

Posted in Scene news with tags , , , on August 3, 2010 by promofabrik
If your music tastes lean towards murder ballads, tongue-in-cheek exercises in the macabre, with just enough bawdy songs about Star Trek and Star Wars to keep your inner nerd happy, you’re in luck!

All the way from New York City, modern day renaissance man VOLTAIRE is bringing his own brand of Neo-Victorian gypsy pirate tunes to Oz, with Adelaide’s own murder balladeers BRILLIG (trio) supporting him for two shows.

Brillig & Voltaire’s ‘Cabaret Extravaganza’ is a match made in Tim Burton’s heaven, and sure to be full of highly theatrical mayhem.

Not only is Voltaire a musician, but also a creator of comic books, animation and toys! His song “Brains!” features on the Cartoon Network show “The Grim Adventures of Billy And Mandy”, while his own first comic series “Chi-Chian” (a dark Cinderella story for the 31st century) was picked up as an animated web series by the Sci Fi Channel’s website.

When Hong Kong’s Toy2R made a toy of Voltaire’s comic book character, DEADY, it was an instant hit and lead to a string of other Voltaire toys including a line of “Pocket Goth” plush toys for Toy Network that can be found at all major USA amusement parks and crane machines at Walmart, Toys R Us, etc. Pretty cool, huh???

Don’t miss out!! (You never know what ‘Deady’ might do…..)
