FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY veröffentlichen ein neues Kapitel in ihrer langen, wegweisenden Biographie und machen genau das, was sie am besten können: Das Aufbrechen und Neuerfinden von Elektronik und Industrial Musik ohne Kompromisse bei Songwriting und Melodie.
“Das neue Kapitel heißt IMPROVISED. ELECTRONIC. DEVICE. und es verbreitert den stilistischen Ansatz der Band einerseits, und besinnt sich andererseits auf die Stärken der Band in Sachen Songwriting und Sounddesign“ sagt Bandgründer Bill Leeb und ergänzt „Wir finden wieder neue Wege um unseren Sound zu definieren.“
I.E.D. ist ein hartes, robustes Album, ein wilder, frischer Hybrid aus Elektronik und elektronisch bearbeiteten Gitarren. Das Album beschleunigt schon im eröffnenden Titeltrack von 0 auf 200 und dementsprechend weit nach oben geht auch der Adrenalinspiegel der überraschten Hörerschaft. “Das ist der erste Song den wir in diesem ungeraden Rhythmus geschrieben haben“ erklärt Bill, “Chris (Peterson, Keyboards & Programming) wollte unbedingt mehr Abwechslung in unserem Sound, er hat uns herausgefordert, neue Wege zu suchen. Viele Gitarrensounds, die von Jared (Slingerland) und Justin (Hagberg, von der kanadischen Metalband 3 Inches Of Blood) eingespielt wurden, erhielten im Nachhinein noch eine elektronische Veredlung um noch ein wenig fremder und aggressiver, technischer zu klingen. Wir wollten, dass gerade der Titeltrack komplex und herausfordernd wird, genau wie die Welt in der wir gerade leben. In dieser Welt gibt es eben keine leichten Antworten mehr.“
Und so spannt sich der Bogen des Albums über das elektronische “Hostage“, das düsterrockige „Release“, das energiereich clubtaugliche „Shifting Through The Lens“ das massivhypnotische „Angriff“ und vor allem das melodischkomplexe „Afterlife“ um schließlich in einem Soundtrackartigepischen Downfall zu enden.
Und hier merkt man plötzlich, dass FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY in ihrer neuen Besetzung endlich wieder zu ihrer maßstabsetzenden Form zurückgekehrt sind: I.E.D. ist der lang erwartete Meilenstein, der an Meisterwerke wie „Caustic Grip“ und „Hard Wired“ anknüpft, und wieder zu den Urtugenden des Industrial zurückkehrt: Härte, Innovation und Frische. Das zeigt sich auch in der VorabAuskopplung „Shifting Through The Lens“, dem treibendsten Clubtrack den FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY seit einer ganzen Dekade geschrieben hat. „Jeremy (Inkel, Keyboards) kam mit dieser genialen Sequenz an, die mir sofort gefallen hatte, weil sie vieles von dem vereint, was wir an Elektronik, Dance und Industrial mögen“. Dann ist da noch noch „Stupidity“ der Gastbeitrag des unvergleichlichen Al Jourgensen (Ministry, Revolting Cocks), der stark an das letzte Ministry Album „The Last Sucker“ angelegt ist. „Wir sind wirklich stolz, ihn als Legende auf diesem Album zu haben“, sagt Bill, “Jeremy war mit seiner Band Left Spine Down auf Tour mit Revolting Cocks, und so kam der Kontakt zu Al zustande. Und Al liebte die Idee nicht nur auf einem FRONT LINE Song zu singen, er stürzte sich komplett in die Produktion, sang, textete und mixte den Song in seinem Studio in El Paso, Texas.“
Mit dem Rückenwind dieses wirklich starken Albums im Gepäck werden natürlich auch verstärkte Liveaktivitäten geplant. FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY planen gleich zwei Europatouren sowohl im Juli als auch im Oktober in Europa. “Wir freuen uns auf diese Touren. Denn wir haben seit langem wieder das Gefühl, dass wir als richtige Bandeinheit unterwegs sind.“

FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY ³ +++ New Single +++ New Album +++ Tour
Always expanding and reconstructing electronic and industrial music to its breaking point while keeping rhythm and melody intact, FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY are preparing to unleash the latest chapter in their storied history with the release of IMPROVISED. ELECTRONIC. DEVICE. on June 25, 2010 on Dependent.
“I.E.D. is definitely furthering the direction of the band and sound, creatively and artistically,” explains founder and mastermind behind FLA, Bill Leeb. “We’re finding new ways to make sound.”
A hearty and robust album thick with a hybrid of electronics and guitars, I.E.D. takes their trademark sound and beefs it up with metallic guitars and stylized industrial beats. Kicking off with the adrenalineinfused title track, it’s apparent that this is a new and improved FLA. “This is the first time in FRONT LINE history that we did a track in a 5/4 signature,”explains Bill. “Chris (Peterson, keyboards) was pushing for more diversity, chal lenging the band to do something different. We wanted this track to be as challenging and complex as the world we live in as there are no easy answers.”
From the electronic bounce of “Hostage” to the dark metal of “Release” to the ambient and atmospheric closing track, “Downfall”, I.E.D. is an album rife with the FLA’s brand of intelligent dance music. The first single “Shifting Through the Lens” is the most danceable track FLA has created in the last decade and came together quite naturally. “Jeremy (Inkel, keyboards) came up with the original sequence for the verse and chorus and, right away, I really liked what I heard,” Bill explains. “It really brings together a lot of the different aspects of industrial and electronic that we all like. ”The inimitable Al Jourgensen (Ministry, Revolting Cocks) guests on the sonic industrial onslaught of “Stupidity,” which Bill describes as “inspired by the Ministry album „The Last Sucker“. Jeremy was on tour with his other band Left Spine Down supporting RevCo and he get to know Al really well. We’re really excited to have him on it!” adds Jeremy, “Not only did Al agree to do the vocals, but he got his hands dirty with the production and mixed the whole song in his studio in El Paso.”
Formed in 1986 when Bill left Skinny Puppy, FLA are still as vital and energetic as ever. With US and European tours planned for Summer and Fall 2010, they’re gearing up for their legendary epic live performances. “We’re quite excited (to tour),” Bill adds. “We feel we have grown as a band over the last four years. We really feel this new album will sound great live and can’t wait to get out there and be creative with it!”
